Privacy Policy

Lifebanc (“Lifebanc,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is the nonprofit, federally designated organ, eye, and tissue recovery organization serving Northeast Ohio. We respect your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect through www.lifebanc.org and related web pages and forms (the “Site”), how we use and share it, the choices you have, and your rights. Please read it carefully.

Scope. This Policy applies to information collected through the Site. It does not apply to medical, clinical, or donation-related information that Lifebanc receives or maintains in its role as an organ procurement organization, which is governed by separate laws (including applicable federal and state health-privacy requirements) and handled outside of this website. It also does not apply to third-party websites we link to, which have their own policies.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide to us

We collect information you choose to give us through the Site, for example when you:

  • Sign up for our newsletter, email lists, or board communications;
  • Contact us, request a speaker or school program, or submit a question through a form;
  • Register to volunteer or sign up for an event such as the Gift of Life Walk & Run;
  • Make a donation or contribution;
  • Send a message to a donor family or recipient through our correspondence forms; or
  • Otherwise communicate with us.

Depending on the form, this may include your name, email address, mailing address, phone number, the content of your message, event or volunteer details, and, for donations, billing information processed by our payment provider (see Section 6).

Information collected automatically

When you visit the Site, we and our service providers automatically collect certain information through cookies and similar technologies, including your IP address, device and browser type, operating system, referring and exit pages, pages viewed, links clicked, and the dates and times of your visits. This information helps us understand how the Site is used and support the analytics and advertising functions described in Section 2.

Online donor registration

When you choose to register your decision to be an organ, eye, and tissue donor, our “Register as a Donor” links direct you to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles / Ohio Donor Registry or the state’s designated registration service. Registration is completed on those third-party government systems, and the information you submit there is governed by their privacy practices, not this Policy.

3. How We Use Information

We use the information described above to:

  • Provide, operate, maintain, and improve the Site;
  • Respond to your inquiries and fulfill your requests (events, volunteering, speakers, correspondence);

  • Maintain the security and integrity of the Site and prevent fraud or misuse; and
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.

4. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share information only as described below:

  • Service providers. Vendors that perform services for us — such as website hosting, email and newsletter delivery, event registration, donation processing, and analytics — who are permitted to use the information only to provide those services.
  • Advertising and analytics partners. Where you have consented, Google, Meta, and StackAdapt receive certain online identifiers and activity data to provide analytics and to deliver and measure advertising, including remarketing. Sharing information with advertising partners for targeted advertising may be considered a “sale” or “share” under certain state laws — see Section 8 for how to opt out.
  • Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or legal process, or where we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Lifebanc, our community, or others.
  • Business or organizational transfers. In connection with a merger, affiliation, reorganization, or similar event, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Policy.
  • With your direction. When you ask us to share your information, such as sending correspondence to a donor family or recipient.

5. Email Communications

If you subscribe to our emails, you may unsubscribe at any time using the link in any message or by contacting us (Section 12). We honor unsubscribe requests promptly, consistent with the CAN-SPAM Act. We may still send you non-promotional messages related to a transaction you initiated, such as a donation receipt.

6. Donations and Payment Processing

Donations made through the Site are processed by a third-party payment processor. Payment card details are provided directly to that processor and are handled under its privacy and security practices; Lifebanc does not store full payment card numbers. We retain donation records (such as your name, contact information, and gift amount) for receipting, acknowledgment, and recordkeeping.

7. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights regarding your personal information:

  • To know or access the personal information we hold about you;
  • To request correction of inaccurate information;
  • To request deletion of your information;
  • To opt out of targeted advertising and of the “sale” or “sharing” of your information;
  • To withdraw consent where processing is based on consent; and
  • To not receive discriminatory treatment for exercising these rights.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 12. We will verify your request and respond within the time required by applicable law. You may designate an authorized agent to act on your behalf.

8. “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information”

Lifebanc does not sell personal information for money. However, our use of advertising cookies and pixels (Google, Meta, and StackAdapt) to deliver targeted advertising may be considered a “sale” or “share” of personal information under the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the CPRA) and similar state laws. You can opt out of this at any time by:

  • Selecting “Reject” or adjusting your choices in our cookie banner or “Cookie Settings” link;
  • Enabling the Global Privacy Control (GPC) in a supported browser, which we treat as a valid opt-out; and
  • Using the industry opt-out tools listed in Section 9.

California residents have additional rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know, delete, correct, and limit use of sensitive personal information, and the right not to be retaliated against for exercising them. Residents of other states with comprehensive privacy laws (including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, and others) have comparable rights. To exercise any of them, contact us as described in Section 12.

9. Your Advertising and Analytics Choices

In addition to our cookie banner, you can manage advertising and analytics tracking through these tools:

  • Google: Ads Settings (adssettings.google.com) and the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout);
  • Meta: your Facebook and Instagram ad preferences;
  • Industry opt-outs: the Digital Advertising Alliance (optout.aboutads.info) and the Network Advertising Initiative (optout.networkadvertising.org);
  • Browser controls: most browsers let you block or delete cookies and send a Global Privacy Control or Do-Not-Track signal.

Because these tools are cookie- and device-specific, you may need to renew your choices if you change browsers or devices or clear your cookies.

10. Children’s Privacy

The Site is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through the Site in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Some Lifebanc programs (such as school education programs) may involve young people; information collected through those programs is handled directly with the school or program and, where required, with parental or guardian consent, rather than through this Site. If you believe a child has provided us information through the Site, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Data Retention, Security, and Other Terms

Retention. We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this Policy, to maintain records of donations and communications, and to meet legal, accounting, and reporting requirements, after which we delete or de-identify it.

Security. We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect information collected through the Site, including encryption in transit (HTTPS). No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Third-party links. The Site links to third-party websites (including the Ohio Donor Registry, social media, and partners). We are not responsible for their content or privacy practices; review their policies before providing information.

Accessibility. Lifebanc is committed to keeping this Site and this Policy accessible. See our Accessibility Notice on the Site, or contact us for assistance in an alternative format.

Out-of-state and international visitors. The Site is operated in the United States. If you access it from elsewhere, you understand your information is processed in the United States.

12. Changes to This Policy and How to Contact Us

We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice. Your continued use of the Site after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
