Northeast Ohio Achieves Another Consecutive Year of Record-Breaking Organ Donations  

Organ Procurement Organization, Lifebanc, Saved Over 430 Lives in 2021 

Following a year of uncertainty, 2021 was truly the year of giving back. Lifebanc, Northeast Ohio’s organ procurement organization, helped save 437 lives in 2021, making it another year of record-breaking numbers.  

In addition to facilitating organ, eye and tissue donations, Lifebanc provided their 2,385 donor family members with 805 hours of individual counseling, four support groups and three one-time seminars and coordinated nearly 541 exchanges of communication with recipients. Over 175 Lifebanc volunteer hours supported community and in-school educational outreach programs, resulting in the addition of nearly 65,000 individuals to the Ohio Donor Registry.  

 “Every year we are met with new challenges, which means new opportunities,” said Gordon Bowen, Lifebanc CEO. “Year after year, we are so grateful for our employees, volunteers, and donors for all that they do to provide the invaluable gift of a second chance at life.” 

Despite the success Lifebanc saw, there remains a critical organ, eye and tissue donor shortage in the United States. There are currently 117,074 people waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant across the country. 3,151 people are waiting in Ohio alone. Raising the number of people who register to be an organ, eye and tissue donor is the best way to increase the chances of those still waiting to receive their lifesaving transplant.
