Peer Group Companion Program

No one
walks alone.

Would you like to connect with a fellow donor family for a supportive conversation — even if you already see a counselor or live far from Lifebanc?

Our Peer Grief Companions are donor family members 5 to 30+ years beyond their loss who have completed multi-session training to:

  • Be present to the pain (not “fix” it)
  • Listen with their hearts and without judgment
  • Walk alongside you at your pace
  • Respect the disorder and confusion of grief
  • Affirm that you are the expert in your grief

The Peer Group Companion Program offers donor families the opportunity to connect with someone who understands the grief and meaning that can follow the donation of a loved one. Sometimes the most comforting support comes from a person who has been through a similar experience — someone who understands the unique emotions that donor families may carry and can offer empathy, perspective, and encouragement.

Peer support is built on shared experience, not formal counseling. A peer companion is someone who has also walked the path of donor family grief and remembrance and is willing to support others with compassion and understanding. That kind of connection can help families feel seen in a way that is different from traditional support resources.

Grief can feel isolating, especially when others around a family do not fully understand what it means to lose someone and also know that their gift helped others live. A Peer Group Companion Program can help bridge that gap. It creates space for honest conversation, quiet understanding, and reassurance that difficult emotions are normal. It can also help families see that healing, while never simple, is possible over time.

Peer support is optional and flexible. Some families may want one-on-one conversation. Others may only want occasional connection. Some may seek support soon after loss, while others may reach out much later.

For many donor families, peer connection can also help with remembrance and meaning-making. Talking with someone who has carried a similar story may make it easier to speak about a loved one, reflect on the donation decision, and understand how grief can coexist with pride and gratitude. These conversations can be gentle, grounding, and deeply human.

The Peer Group Companion Program is an extension of Lifebanc’s commitment to ongoing family care. It recognizes that donor families often benefit from community, and that healing can be strengthened by shared understanding. While every family’s story is unique, there is comfort in knowing that others have walked a similar road and are willing to walk alongside someone else.
