Social Worker and Counselor CEU Workshops for 2018

Spirituality and Grief: Creating a Space for Healing In the Midst of Pain – March 12, 2018

Based on the work of Alan Wolfelt, participants will gain an understanding of the spiritual care needed by those who grieve, as well as how to provide spiritual support. Participants will discover ways to create and sustain hope when the mourner feels removed from the very things that make life worth living. In addition, participants will explore barriers to the spiritual care of those who are grieving and will develop tools to assist clients who know that, on the other side of loss, there is the potential to rejuvenate the spirit.

Soul Whispers – Writing as A Way to Manifest Healing – June 11, 2018

This experiential workshop will provide the opportunity for participants to discover how writing can be used to explore the raw intensity of loss, console the grieving person, seek solidarity in a shared loss, and make meaning of an unsought passage. Through lecture, writing, and small group reflection, participants will explore the power of words as a tool for the bereaved and for the clinicians who work with them to process the mutual experience of loss in a personal and professional capacity. Participants will explore how writing can be used in their own practice both as a means of self-exploration and as inspiration for the journey they are on with those who grieve.

Death and Bereavement Across Cultures – October 15, 2018

As counselors and social workers, we are ethically required to have knowledge of an individual's physical, social, educational, and spiritual existence. The expressions of grief and the needs that emerge vary widely from one person to another and are subject to past experiences, cultural expectations, personal beliefs, and relationships. An individual's identity comes from a sense of personal uniqueness, solidarity with group ideals, continuity with the past, present, and future, and from the culture by which an individual is raised or adopted. This workshop will explore death and bereavement rituals and beliefs of major world religions, explain their psychological and historical context, show how customs change over time, and discuss what implications may be for the future. When the workshop concludes, participants should have a sense of the richness of mourning traditions around the world.
