Lifebanc has identified an incredible opportunity to expand our mission of healing and saving lives through the Birth Tissue Donation Program.
Each year, thousands of placentas and umbilical cords are discarded after birth — yet these tissues hold powerful healing potential. Through Lifebanc’s Birth Tissue Donation Program, expectant mothers can give others a second chance at healing without affecting their own delivery or baby’s care.
Working with partner hospitals and certified tissue processors, Lifebanc can help heal and save more than 75,000 lives annually as participation grows across Northeast Ohio.
A single placenta or umbilical cord can help heal up to 75 people — a gift of life that begins with birth.
For Expectant Mothers
Donating your birth tissue is a simple, meaningful way to give back.
- Donation is simple, safe, and does not affect your delivery or birth plan.
- A Lifebanc coordinator will contact you before your due date to confirm eligibility.
- After birth, our team respectfully recovers the tissue while you focus on your newborn.
Only about 15% of mothers are medically ineligible, usually due to infectious or high-risk medical conditions.
What to Expect:
- You’ll review educational materials around your 14-week visit.
- If you’re interested, you’ll give consent for Lifebanc to contact you.
- Two weeks before your due date, a Lifebanc coordinator will help you complete a 30-minute medical and social history questionnaire.
- A brief physical exam and blood draw are performed by your care team.
- Lifebanc will review relevant prenatal and delivery records to confirm eligibility.
For Hospital Partners
Lifebanc collaborates closely with labor and delivery teams to integrate birth tissue donation into hospital workflows — providing all materials, training, and recognition for participating staff.
