When to Call Lifebanc

Donor Referral Center

Please contact Lifebanc Donor Referral Center immediately at if any of the following occur:

  • You answer YES to ANY of the questions below
  • A physician plans a DNR discussion with the family of a potential organ donor
  • There are plans to withdraw support of a potential organ donor

 


Referrals to Lifebanc should be made within one hour of meeting these clinical triggers:

1.  Does the patient have a neuro injury:  Anoxia,  CVA , Trauma, etc.

2.  Is the patient mechanically ventilated?

3. Does the patient have a Glascow Coma Scale (GCS) equal to or less than five (≤5) OR the absence of two of the following brain stem reflexes?

  • Pupillary response

  • Corneal reflex

  • Cough

  • Gag

  • Response to pain

  • Respiration

  • Doll's eyes

  • Cold calorics

Call Again When… 

  • Physician or family begins to consider end of life options

  • Brain death testing is discussed or planned

  • If patient’s condition changes

  • Physician or family discusses a DNR status

  • Prior to ANY withdraw support
