Patients with a Potentially Lethal Head Injury or Illness
  • Head trauma
  • Intracranial hemorrhaging
  • Stroke
  • Anoxia
  • Drug intoxication/overdose
  • CNS (Central Nervous System) tumor
  • Patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale of 5 or less without recent administration of narcotics, paralytics or sedatives
  • Pediatric Verbal Score (V-score) of 1 (unresponsive)
  • Refer prior to a declaration of brain death
The Consent Process
  • Call LifeBanc at 800-558-5433 with early referrals.
  • Keep the family informed of the nature of the neurological injury to prepare them for the potential pronouncement of brain death.
  • Continue to medically manage the patient and maintain hemodynamic stability.
  • Brain death is determined by the physician.
  • Family is informed of the death.
  • Make sure the family understands and acknowledges the death.
  • Family discussion regarding organ donation should be done collaboratively among the healthcare team, including LifeBanc.

  • Ventilator dependent - apneic
